The brace and spoon bits, or tapered reamers are used for drilling holes to receive legs, spindles and stretchers.
Today power lathes for turning legs, stretchers and arm stumps have taken the place of the spring pole lathe of the 18th Century, which was powered by the Chair maker's foot.
Windsor chair making evolved during a period when only hand tools were largely available. Many of the Chair maker’s tools were designed to accomplish a specific step in the process.
The Chair maker's tool box often contained the gutter adz, the travisher and a pull shave for the carving and shaping of the seat.
The drawknife, spokeshave and scraper (or chairdevil) are used for shaping the riven hardwoods into spindles, arms and backbows prior to steam bending.
